What to Wear in Jordan – Respectful & Comfortable Clothing Tips for Travelers

Jordan is a country of warm hospitality, diverse climates, and deep-rooted traditions. When it comes to clothing, travelers often ask us at Petra Moon:

“What should I wear in Jordan that’s both respectful and practical?”

Great question — and we’re here to answer it clearly and kindly.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through Jordan’s cultural expectations, the best fabrics for the weather, what to pack for Petra and Wadi Rum, and specific tips for women, men, and all seasons.

Let’s make sure you’re packed right — and dressed to enjoy every step of your journey.

Understanding the Jordanian Dress Code

Jordan is a moderate Islamic country. It’s not as conservative as some of its neighbors, but modesty is still appreciated, especially in rural areas and holy sites.

That doesn’t mean you have to be fully covered — just respectful of the local culture.

✅ Think light, breathable, and loose — and leave the short-shorts at home.

What to Wear in Amman, Petra, and Tourist Areas

In cities like Amman, Petra, Aqaba, and the Dead Sea, locals are used to tourists and you’ll see a wide mix of styles. That said:

👩 For Women:

  •
  • Loose-fitting pants, maxi skirts, or long dresses

  •
  • T-shirts, blouses (avoid deep necklines or crop tops)

  •
  • Light scarf or shawl (especially for visiting mosques or churches)

  •
  • Swimsuits at resorts are fine, but bikinis are best kept to private hotel beaches

👨 For Men:

  •
  • T-shirts or polo shirts

  •
  • Lightweight long pants or knee-length shorts

  •
  • Avoid going shirtless outside beach areas

💡 In Petra, you’ll walk a lot — wear hiking shoes, sun hat, and layers.

What to Wear in Wadi Rum & the Desert

The desert can be hot during the day and chilly at night. Plan for both:

  •
  • Breathable cotton or linen during the day

  •
  • Long-sleeved shirt or light jacket for evenings

  •
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals

  •
  • A scarf or keffiyeh can protect against sand and sun

Bonus: Many travelers love wearing the Jordanian red-and-white keffiyeh (available everywhere and makes a great souvenir).

What to Wear at Religious & Historical Sites

When visiting mosques, churches, or sacred locations like Mount Nebo or the Baptism Site:

  •
  • Cover shoulders and knees

  •
  • Women may be asked to cover their hair in mosques (bring a scarf)

  •
  • Avoid sheer or tight-fitting clothing

Respect earns respect — and a little modesty goes a long way.
